Alex Avila, 2004 Scholar

Castlemont High School

UC Santa Barbara Graduate

Alex grew up in a violent Oakland neighborhood, but never gave up on his dream of becoming a filmmaker.  In 2008, he graduated college with a BA degree in film and media studies. He is the first in his family to graduate from college.   He has produced several short films and today he is a writer for New Art in Light, a website designed to provide support for those interested in the art of film making.  “East Bay College Fund has meant so much to me.  I can rejoice in the fact that I have found something that is to my liking and allows me to do what I studied for.”

Bersabel Woldemariam, 2008 Scholar

Oakland Tech High School

UC Davis

An Eritrean, Bersabel was deported from her childhood home of Ethiopia when she was just nine years old.  She was sent to a military camp to eventually become a soldier.  She had a different vision of what her life should be and in 10th grade seized the opportunity to come to America.  Today she is a 3.4 GPA Biological Sciences major at UC Davis with the goal of becoming a doctor.  “College is one of the most remarkable experiences of my life, and it is a complete honor to have your support.  I cannot thank East Bay College Fund enough for what you are doing for me and many others like me.”

De’Andre Cherry, 2006 Scholar (shown with East Bay College Fund mentor Javarte Bobino)

Oakland Tech High School

Morehouse College

In his first years in high school, De’Andre had an indifferent attitude about his academic performance.  After discussions with his parents and the realization that he didn’t want to throw his life away, he changed.  Today De’Andre is in his final year as a Physics and Mathematics major at Morehouse College.  He hopes to continue his education at one of the top graduate schools in the Sciences and Engineering fields.  Like many of our Scholars De’Andre is giving back to the community.  He mentors and tutors 4th – 8th grade boys, teaching them life skills needed to be successful in today’s world.  “The encouragement and support that the East Bay College Fund program provides is greatly appreciated.  Because of your contributions, I am able to continue my goal and dream of acquiring a college degree.”
