East Bay College Fund has received a $10,000 grant from The Clorox Company Foundation. The grant will be used to support the scholarship programs of East Bay College Fund.
East Bay College Fund, founded in 2002, is a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides $16,000 four-year college scholarships and mentoring to Oakland public high school students.
“We were impressed by the East Bay College Fund’s comprehensive and unique approach to providing college scholarships to low-income students from our area,” said Shona Carter, Special Projects Associate for the East Bay Community Foundation, administrator of The Clorox Company Foundation. “We especially like their focus on engaging community members to provide scholarship funding and mentoring.”
East Bay College Fund President Andy Fremder said, “We are excited about receiving our first foundation grant, particularly from Clorox, which has been such a leader in supporting innovative educational programs in our community. This funding will help us expand our efforts to assist young people who have the potential to do some wonderful things.”
Later this month, East Bay College Fund will announce the ten recipients of its second annual Great Expectations Awards. The awards will be presented at a public ceremony at Mills College on May 18. In 2003, East Bay College Fund provided seven $16,000 four-year scholarships and mentoring support to Oakland public high school students who began college in Fall 2003. “We want to help students who are under-represented in higher education and who are often overlooked in the scholarship process.” Fremder said.
